Junk Removal Specialist: Common Mistakes Property Owners Make During DIY Junk Removal

Out in Yucca Valley, by Joshua Tree is one of my favorite outdoor art installations by Noah Purifoy. You get to wander around a pretty desolate area and explore this surreal and eerie site.

If you’re tired of living amid the clutter, you may have decided to do something about it. Getting rid of junk can help make your living space more functional and help you get better sleep, especially when it’s done in the bedroom.

But getting rid of junk in and around your home correctly involves knowing what can hinder your progress. Here are a few common mistakes property owners make during DIY junk removal, according to a junk removal specialist.

1. Common Mistake: Illicit Dumping

A big mistake you can make during DIY junk removal is dumping your trash in areas where it’s prohibited. Garbage cannot be dumped anywhere, and laws punish people who leave their waste in forests and along roadsides. Laws also ban the disposal of trash in abandoned areas.

Yet despite these laws, people still dump their junk because it can be faster and easier than taking it to an official dump site or dumpster. Remember that if you leave your junk in an illegal area, you could face steep fines if caught.

2. Common Mistake: Putting Trash on the Ground

Sometimes, people make the mistake of putting trash on the ground when the dumpster they are trying to use is already full or overflowing. Stray animals can easily access junk on the floor and rip open anything you are trying to dispose of. This won’t just leave a mess in and around the dumpster but also harm the animals as they could be exposed to sharp objects like glass.

Instead of leaving your junk beside a dumpster, look for a dump site open to the public with the room to take the trash you are trying to dispose of.

3. Common Mistake: Not Separating Waste

As a general rule of thumb, you should separate the different types of waste you are getting of. When you do this, you help prevent the production of unwanted greenhouse gases because when dry and wet waste are mixed at a landfill and break down, they create these gases. Garbage collectors also appreciate homeowners who separate and label the trash they are getting rid of because it makes disposal jobs easier.

And if you have chemicals or hazardous materials to get rid of, you should also discard these separately. These include:

  • Flammable substances
  • Batteries
  • Paint

Remember that you also cannot dispose of electronics in dumpsters, as this violates several laws. Printers, appliances, and computers should be donated or recycled through the manufacturers of these products or where you purchased them.

4. Common Mistake: Burning Garbage

Burning your trash can pose a severe health risk to you, your family, and your property. The smoke from burning your garbage can cause heart and lung problems, as well as pollute the air you breathe. The fire you create can also get out of hand and damage your property and the surrounding area. This could cause you to pay thousands of dollars in fines because most local governments have laws against people burning their junk.
